Pulse and Boil Rice

Here's a simple and flavorful recipe for Dal and Rice:

Ingredients:

For Dal:

1 cup yellow split lentils (moong dal or chana dal)

4 cups water

1 medium-sized onion, finely chopped

2 tomatoes, chopped

2-3 garlic cloves, minced

1-inch piece of ginger, grated

1 green chili, chopped (adjust according to your spice preference)

1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder

1 teaspoon cumin seeds

1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds

1/4 teaspoon asafoetida (hing)

1 tablespoon ghee or vegetable oil

Salt to taste

Fresh  (coriander leaves) for garnish

Lemon wedges for serving

For Rice:

1 cup basmati rice

2 cups water

Instructions:

For Dal:

Rinse the lentils under cold water until the water runs clear. Drain the water.

In a pressure cooker or a large pot, add the rinsed lentils and 4 cups of water. Cook until the lentils are soft and tender. If using a pressure cooker, cook for about 4-5 whistles. If using a pot, it may take around 20-25 minutes.

In a separate pan, heat the ghee or oil over medium heat. Add the cumin seeds and mustard seeds. Let them splutter.

Add the chopped onions and sauté until they turn golden brown.

Stir in the minced garlic, grated ginger, and chopped green chili. Cook for another minute or until the raw aroma disappears.

Add the chopped tomatoes and cook until they turn soft and mushy.

Add the turmeric powder and asafoetida. Mix well.

Now, add the cooked lentils to the pan and mix everything together. You can adjust the consistency of the dal by adding more water if desired.

Season the dal with salt according to your taste.

Let the dal simmer for a few minutes, allowing the flavors to blend together. Garnish with chopped cilantro and turn off the heat.

For Rice:

Rinse the basmati rice under cold water until the water runs clear. Drain the water.

In a saucepan, add the rinsed rice and 2 cups of water.

Bring the water to a boil, then reduce the heat to low, cover the saucepan with a lid, and let the rice cook for about 15-20 minutes or until all the water is absorbed and the rice is fully cooked.

Serving:

Serve the hot and flavorful dal with steamed rice. Squeeze some fresh lemon juice on top of the dal for an extra burst of flavor. You can also accompany the meal with some papadums or a side salad.

Enjoy your wholesome and nutritious Dal and Rice meal!
