Delicious Crispy Onion Pakoras
Onion Pakoras are popular Pakistani and Indian snack. Here's a simple and tasty recipe to make Onion Pakoras at home:
Ingredients:
2 large onions, thinly sliced
1 cup gram flour (besan)
2 tablespoons rice flour (optional, for extra crispiness)
1 teaspoon cumin seeds
1 teaspoon coriander powder
1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
1/2 teaspoon red chili powder (adjust to your spice preference)
1 teaspoon garam masala (optional)
A pinch of asafoetida (hing)
1-2 green chilies, finely chopped (adjust to your spice preference)
A handful of fresh coriander leaves, chopped
1 teaspoon garlic paste (optional)
Salt to taste
Water (about 1/4 to 1/2 cup)
Oil for deep frying
Instructions:
In a large mixing bowl, add the thinly sliced onions.
Add all the dry spices: cumin seeds, coriander powder, turmeric powder, red chili powder, garam masala (if using), and a pinch of asafoetida.
Now, add the green chilies, fresh coriander leaves, and garlic paste (if using) to the bowl.
Sprinkle salt over the mixture according to your taste.
Gradually add the gram flour (besan) and rice flour (if using) to the bowl. Mix everything well until the onions are coated with the flour and spices. The moisture from the onions should be enough to bind the mixture. If needed, add a little water at a time to make a thick batter. Avoid making it too watery; you want a coating consistency.
Heat oil for deep frying in a deep pan or pot on medium heat. The oil should be hot enough before you start frying the pakoras.
Take small portions of the onion batter with your hands or a spoon and carefully drop them into the hot oil. You can shape them into small flat rounds or just drop spoonfuls for a more rustic look.
Fry the pakoras in batches, but do not overcrowd the pan. Fry until they turn golden brown and crispy. It usually takes around 3-4 minutes per batch.
Once done, remove the pakoras with a slotted spoon and place them on paper towels to absorb any excess oil.
Serve the delicious onion pakoras hot with green chutney, tamarind chutney, or ketchup. Enjoy them as a snack with a cup of tea or as a side dish with your favorite meal.
Note: Onion pakoras are best enjoyed fresh and crispy, so try to serve them immediately after frying.
Feel free to adjust the spices and add your favorite herbs to customize the flavor to your liking. Enjoy these crispy onion pakoras with family and friends!
